There is a version of your new home that has a place for everything. Where the pantry makes sense, the bathroom never feels cluttered, and you are not doing that thing where you open three cupboards looking for the same item. That version is absolutely achievable, but it requires thinking about storage during your selections, not after you’ve moved in and realised you don’t have a spot for your microwave.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is where storage decisions matter most, and where the details you plan for now will thank you every single day.
Deep drawers for pots, pans, and lids tend to be far more practical than base cupboards. You can see everything at a glance without crouching and rummaging. Think about your utensils too, whether that’s a dedicated drawer within reach of the cooktop or a built-in insert that keeps everything organised. And if you cook regularly, spice storage is worth a specific conversation. A pull-out spice rack or a drawer with a tiered insert means no more digging through a crowded shelf mid-cook.
Think about where your appliances will live. The coffee machine, toaster, microwave, air fryer. If they are going to live on the bench, make sure there is power nearby. If you want them hidden, factor in the cupboard space and the clearance needed to actually use them.
Consider your bins too. A pull-out bin built into the cabinetry is one of the most practical things you can include, and it’s far easier to plan for during your selections than to retrofit later.
The Bathroom
Bathrooms are easy to underplan for storage, and it’s one of the most common things people wish they had thought about more carefully.
Vanity storage is the obvious starting point, but think beyond just drawers. Niches in the shower for products, suitable towel rails and a hook for a hand towel. These are all worth raising at your Selections Consult.
If you have an ensuite and a separate main bathroom, think about what each one needs to store independently. The ensuite tends to be about daily personal routines, while the main bathroom might need to work harder for kids, guests, and everything in between.
The Laundry
The laundry is one of the most underrated rooms in a new home, but done right, it can make even the most dreaded chores feel a little more bearable.
Overhead cabinetry, a broom cupboard, a dedicated spot for the ironing board. These things cost relatively little to include at the build stage and save enormous frustration later. If your laundry connects to an outdoor area or garage, think about how that flow works and whether there is storage that could serve both spaces.
A sink with a decent bench either side is also worth considering if you have the room. The laundry has a way of becoming a multipurpose utility space, and having the bench space to match makes it far more functional.
Don't Forget To Ask
Some storage decisions are structural and need to be considered early, before your plans are locked in. Others can be addressed in your Selections Consult. Either way, the conversation is worth having early.
Come to your Selections Consult with a clear sense of what frustrated you about storage in your last home, what you have a lot of, and where you spend most of your time. The more specific you can be, the better the outcome.
Storage is one of those things that is invisible when it works and impossible to ignore when it doesn’t. Get it right and your new home will feel considered and functional from day one.
