STYLE FILE: Abbey & Dylan's Modern Monochrome

Picturing the look you’re after is one thing. Choosing just the right colours, materials, fixtures and fittings to bring that look to life is so much easier when you have a team of interior design experts on hand, as Abbey and Dylan discovered on their journey to Modern Monochrome.

Even then, there was a surprise twist or two along the way.

What started as one style inspiration – Abbey’s vision for white, clean, seamless and modern – took an unexpected turn when Dylan added black tapware into the mix.

The Design Brief

“For us it was about creating a home to last. Minimal, simple, on trend but not too trendy,” Abbey says.

The look was uncluttered and sophisticated in its simplicity, yet still warm, relaxed and welcoming. The clean lines and big, open, light-filled spaces the couple pictured were a perfect match for their love of entertaining and a fabulous heart-of-the-home kitchen was a must.

In the master suite, hotel-style comfort and understated luxury were the inspiration.

Bringing the Vision to Life:

Working hand-in-hand with the team of interior design experts at Home Collective, Abbey and Dylan were able to explore all elements of their style inspiration, fine-tuning their ideas as they went.
“I was all about all-white-everything. Then Dylan suggested black taps, which I was okay with, thinking everything else could remain white,” Abbey says.

It wasn’t until they sat down with the experts to make the selections for their new home that they realised Dylan’s preference for black taps opened up new style possibilities.

With the help of Home Collective, our clients were able to merge an all-white inspiration with inky-black accents to create their own unique version of Modern Monochrome.

“Our selections consultant suggested we keep it cohesive and draw the black throughout other areas of the house, creating more of a feature. We love it!” Abbey says.

Touch, Feel, Play

With a world of samples, full-size products, mood boards and colour swatches to play with at Home Collective, our clients could see their Modern Monochrome vision come together, giving them a real sense of confidence in their selections.

They could see how everything from the tiles, taps and the benchtops, to the kitchen appliances, lighting and paint colours would work together seamlessly. It was reassuring to know their selections and their budget were in sync too.

Style Highlights

Neutral base: Tonal palette of white-on-white as the foundation of the whole look to keep it clean, seamless, sleek and timeless.

Inky accents: Black and charcoal provide just the right amount of contrast against the predominantly all-white backdrop, from the tapware and granite kitchen sink, to the kitchen appliances and the balustrade to the staircase.

Hotel retreat: A rich, emerald-green velvet headboard and striking black, fluted glass pendant lights soften the look in the master suite to create a moody, hotel-style ambience that’s perfectly in keeping with the Modern Monochrome concept.

Modern simplicity: An abundance of white cabinetry, a fuss-free splashback window with garden view, a walk-in pantry with appliance zone and an oversized island bench with bar seating make for a standout kitchen that is as stunning as it is functional for a couple who love to entertain.

Adding warmth: Hybrid flooring in natural oak, natural materials such as timber and cane, and pops of muted colour keep the whole look, relaxed, warm and inviting.

Consistency: Sleek black window frames help to draw the modern monochromatic styling into every room.

Character: Reclaimed brick brings together modern street appeal and the character and charm Abbey and Dylan love about their Victoria Park neighbourhood.
