Stories from our place to yours: Meet Sonja

"It's about seeing memories in front of me that take me back to happy times."

Meet Sonja, a busy solo mum of two young kids, who found a fresh start in her new Dale Alcock Home. Approaching the two-year mark since receiving the keys to her haven, Sonja not only looks forward to returning home everyday, but witnesses the same excitement from her children. In a recent conversation with Sonja, we delved into her journey from inspiration to completion, uncovering some of the cherished features of her new home.

The Inspiration

Sonja’s inspiration for her new abode traces back to her time in Bowden, where she bought her first home featuring original brickwork and intricate render designs. Recreating the sense of home from that period, she incorporated a recycled-look brick element, aiming for authenticity and homeliness.

Art played a significant role in shaping her vision. As an avid painter, Sonja wanted to showcase not only her creations but also the artworks she had collected over time. This vision materialised into what is now described as ‘Industrial Arthouse’.

The Wishlist

Sonja had just a few must-haves on her wishlist. She aimed to seamlessly integrate the inspiration from her first home by incorporating recycled brick. A resort-style pool, extending from the open-plan living area, became a must-have for enjoyable downtime with her kids. And at the top of her list was a wardrobe that would bring daily joy.

“I love fashion, so a glamorous wardrobe was at the top of my Wishlist.”

The Selections Process

Sonja’s selections process was a thoughtful and enjoyable journey. With her bestie by her side, she meticulously planned each room, considering colour schemes and desired fittings.

Her advice for those embarking on a similar journey: “I’d fully recommend that anyone building a house takes that time before their selections meeting to really think about what they want their home to feel like. This helps you feel prepared so selections don’t feel overwhelming, and it’s a joyful process.”

Favourite Room

Sonja’s favourite space in her new home is undoubtedly her wardrobe, a 3×3 haven created by relocating her laundry to the garage. Describing it as reminiscent of the “Sex and the City” movie, she finds peace in its perfectly decked out design.

“The whole bedroom suite is fantastic, spacious, a beautiful usable space. My wardrobe holds everything from my year 11 prom dress to my everyday work wardrobe. I have so many memories attached to pieces in the wardrobe. It’s about seeing memories in front of me.”

The learnings

Reflecting on her home-building journey, Sonja acknowledged a couple of minor things she wished she’d done differently. “I did leave one PowerPoint off one wall, and I wish I’d put it there, but if that’s the worst of it, I can live with that.” She also expresses a slight regret about not proceeding with an additional skylight due to budget constraints, as it’s one of her absolute favourite design features of the home.

“I’m truly grateful for the effort and for the ease of my project; I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”
